Viruses can enter a dedicated server via an insecure network service. For example: HTTP or HTTPS. New vulnerabilities in Microsoft server software are found on a regular basis and the servers need to be updated as Microsoft releases updated code.

It is very important that Windows is up-to-date. If not, a full Windows update should be performed as soon as possible and all outstanding updates should be applied. See http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. At a minimum all “critical” updates should be applied. Alentus recommends applying all other updates as well (recommended updates, driver updates, etc.).

Alentus offers a Windows update service at no charge. We can configure a dedicated server to automatically update itself from our Windows update server. The Alentus update server only performs critical updates, the others are left to the dedicated server administrator to apply if desired.

Dedicated Server customers can request that this update service be set up through the SupportCenter– Submit a Ticket > Alentus Support. The server may need to be rebooted to complete the installation of some updates. When requesting that the automatic update service be set up, it is important to also specify the time of day for the reboot(s) to occur (also specify the time zone). If and when it is required, the reboot will be automatic.

Another approach towards enhanced security is to never use the server as a web or email client. Internet Explorer and Outlook have been known to introduce a number of vulnerabilities. These programs should therefore not be run on the server unless absolutely necessary (for example, for trouble-shooting purposes).
