If you do not have this information, please contact our Technical Support department to obtain the name of your mail server.

POP3 Email

POP3 email boxes store your email on our email servers, which you retrieve through your email software on your local computer.

Outgoing SMTP Email

Please note that Alentus does not automatically provide an SMTP gateway for outgoing email messages sent from your local workstation using an email client such as Outlook (your dial-up/DSL/cable account normally includes this option). If you do require an outgoing SMTP gateway, we can provide this service for monthly fee of $4.95. Note that this service is included with the Enterprise .NET and MX hosting plans.

Alentus does provide outgoing email services via WebMail, and from you website using the ASPMail component. Please note that the Microsoft CDONTS component is NOT supported on Alentus web servers. Instead, we provide full use of the ASPMail component, which does everything that CDONTS does, and more. Full documentation and scripting examples of using the ASPMail component can be found in the TSC section ASP & Components.

Retrieving Your Email - To get your POP3 email from our email servers, you will have to set up your email software on your local computer (such as Microsoft Outlook or Eudora) to retrieve it. In the setup of the email program, you will list your POP3 server name, your full email address, and your password. This is usually done through the options menu in your program, but you may want to consult the documentation for the email program you are using. Your POP3 server name is your domain name (mail.yourdomain.com), and you will enter the appropriate full email address (jsmith@yourdomain.com) and password you select when you set up your POP3 account with us. You connect to the Internet through your local ISP, and the program will retrieve your mail.

Note: There is usually a field in your email program setup asking for your SMTP server (or outgoing mail server). Please note that Alentus Corporation does not provide this service. You should contact your Internet Service Provider for the name of this server. Also, please do not use the "leave messages on Server" option if this available in your program setup. Doing so would cause you to quickly exceed the capacity of your mail box, and your email may be returned to the sender.

Modifying Email Account Details - To access your mail accounts it is important to note that your account names must include your domain.

Email account example......: 'me@mydomain.com'

To access your email from an email client program such as Outlook you must set it to retrieve from the mail server.

Below is an example of how to configure Outlook2000 to access your email. This information is set and edited in Outlook by accessing:

TOOLS --> ACCOUNTS --> MAIL TAB --> PROPERTIES --> SERVERS TAB

Server Information
My incoming mailer server is a POP3 server.
Incoming (POP3).......: mail.mydomain.com
Outgoing Mail (SMTP)..: smtp.myisp.com

Incoming Mail Server
Account Name..........: 'me@mydomain.com'
Password..............: ******

Please consult your email client documentation for a full description on how to configure your client software.

Important note: "smtp.myisp.com" is your local provider's outgoing email server. Your local ISP or LAN administrator can provide you with the exact name of this server.

Complete details of Configuring Outlook 2000 can be found here: http://support.alentus.com/KB/a12/configuring-outlook-2000-to-send-and-retrieve-your-email.aspx?KBSearchID=234 There are limitations to POP3 accounts on our email servers:

1. You are limited to a specific number of POP3 accounts, depending on the features of your website hosting package. All packages have additional email account options and you can order more at any time. To do this, please contact our Sales Department or use the forms in the TSC to request more. Current pricing for email and other options can be found on our hosting plan comparison page.

2. Receiving email messages is subject to the amount of email disk space included with your Alentus hosting plan. Your available email disk space is the total amount of disk space that all of your POP accounts are consuming at one time, subtracted from the total amount of email disk space your hosting plan allows.

Your mail server may refuse to process additional messages if an incoming message or attachment exceeds the amount of available email disk space. If you expect to process high volumes of email, or receive email messages with unusually large attachments, please contact our Sales Department to discuss the various options available for accommodating your requirements.

Email Forwarding

Email Forwarding (also known an "email aliases") allows you to have your domain's email forwarded to any existing email address you have set up with your ISP or a web-based email service (such as Hotmail, YahooMail, @Home, or others). An example of email forwarding is given below:

You have chosen the ID "jsmith" for your email address at your domain to forward to 'jsmith50@hotmail.com'. Once you have set this up using the Email Admin Console, your email address will be 'jsmith@yourdomain.com' and it will automatically forward to the address 'jsmith50@hotmail.com'. If you want your replies to have your return address as 'jsmith@yourdomain.com,' you must enter this in the "return address" field in your email program's options menu.

There are no specific size limitations on the forwarding accounts, however large attachments may be refused if there is insufficient temporary space to hold them. Currently we have several gigabytes available for temporary processing, but extremely high activity may significantly reduce the available space for short periods of time.

Name Restrictions

The names "root" and "postmaster" are reserved for the system and are subject to some limitations. The name "root" is reserved by the operating system and cannot be used at all for email purposes. The name "postmaster" is for use by your mail administrator (usually yourself) for receiving managing your email accounts, handling misdirected mail to your domain and to receive alerts regarding abuse or other mail related events.

More information about our email services can be found in the Email Admin Console, WebMail and Configuring Outlook sections of the Alentus SupportCenter Knowledgebase.

If you have any questions about setting up you email accounts, and cannot find the answers here or in the Knowledgebase, please submit a ticket to the Technical Support Department through the Alentus Support Center.
