Can you give me information about allowing anonymous access to my SharePoint site?

By default, SharePoint does not allow anonymous access. If anonymous access is desired for the site in general, it must be explicidly set. Furthermore, even if anonymous access is enabled for the site, it must also be enabled at the document or list level for each document or list that it is desired to allow anonymous access to. Additionally, at the document or list level, the type of anonymous access is specified: add, edit, and/or view. The following two procedures show how to change anonymous access to your SharePoint website.

Change Anonymous Access to Entire Site

1. From the main SharePoint menu, select Site Settings | Go to Site Administration | Manage anonymous access. This takes you to the “Change Anonymous Access Settings” page.

2. Under “Use this page to allow or deny anonymous users and authenticated users access to your Web site“, select desired setting. Anonymous users can access:
- Entire Web site
- Lists and libraries
- Nothing

Note: If the first or second option is selected, anonymous access still needs to be enabled at the “Library/List” level. See part 2 of this procedure “Library/List Level Anonymous Access”. If “Nothing” is selected, then settings in part 2 of this procedure will have no effect.

Library/List Level Anonymous Access

1. On the list or library that you wish to change, choose "Modify settings and columns".

2. Select "Change permissions for this ".

3. Under “Actions” on the left side panel, select “Change anonymous access”.

4. On the Anonymous Access page, specify what permissions anonymous users are to have in this library or list. You can select one or more of the following, or leave them unselected if no anonymous access is to be allowed (default):
- Add Items - Add items to lists, add documents to document libraries, add Web discussion comments.
- Edit Items - Edit items in lists, edit documents in document libraries, edit Web discussion comments in documents, and customize Web Part Pages in document libraries.
- View Items - View items in lists, documents in document libraries, view Web discussion comments, and set up e-mail alerts for lists.

Note: For any of the above selections to work, anonymous access must have been enabled at the site level for either the “Entire Web site” or for “Lists and libraries”.
