What is SSL?

SSL is short for Secure Sockets Layer, a protocol developed by Netscape that enables a web browser and a web server to communicate securely. The SSL protocol requires the web server to have a digital certificate installed on it in order for an SSL connection to be made.

By convention, web pages that require an SSL connection start with https: instead of http:.

Reliance is placed on two mathematically related, but different "keys"; a "public" key, and "private" key. A key is an extremely large prime number. The private key is used by the holder to identify him/herself online, and must be kept very safe. On the other hand the public key is just that, public. It is used to verify that the communication was sent by the holder of the corresponding private key, but can never actually be used to derive the private key itself.
